F&%) Diabetes

Today is the first week of Diabetes Blog week.  Each day we have a prompt and are called on to post a response.  You can read all responses at my friend Karen’s site Bitter~Sweet.  Also please remember RABlog week will occur in September.  I hope you join the fun then as well.

Prompt 1 for Monday

Let’s kick off the week by talking about why we are here in the diabetes blog space. What is the most important diabetes awareness message to you? Why is that message important for you, and what are you trying to accomplish by sharing it on your blog?

The message I chose is F&%) Diabetes.   I borrowed it from CreakyJoints so it is not an original idea.  But the main thing is what the message conveys.  I dislike diabetes in the same way I hate arthritis or any disease.  Ok, I hate arthritis more.  So when I thought about this topic I wanted to give it a nice kick.  But well, I admit I did copy it

I also copied it from the wonderful phrase Duck Fiabetes, which is a classic.  I think many of us like to find a way to use that word (yes you know what I am talking about) as a way to express our outrage at having diabetes. But I just love the character representation for the word.

I tossed around various ideas that might represent the meaning without using the actual words (yeah I know the one I picked is not a word), so I looked around.  Maybe I could try shag, sleep with, screw (I have heard that one as well), procreate (there is a new one), or maybe I should try; I Do Diabetes Daily?  I once worked in a political campaign for a politician named Daily.  Our working motto for the campaign was Do It Daily! But, I Do Diabetes Daily seems not nearly as fun.

Other Slogans

I did consider other slogans to express how upset most of us are about living with diabetes?  I contemplated: Be nice to diabetics, we deal with enough pricks already.  I like that one.  But then again some folks have thought of me as a prick, so that does not work so well. Here is another one I love: I shoot up when I get high?  I love that one, but that is a tough one to sell outside our community.   I am a fan of: Diabetes, It’s only a word, not a sentence; but I like the punch of a small number of words.

So I chose F&%) Diabetes.  And the hashtag #F&%)Diabetes.  Yes, I borrowed the phrase, and I hope neither community minds.  So let’s have fun this week and remember that my hashtag may not be original, but it is fun.  So at least until I read all the cool mottos our talented community comes up with, F&%) Diabetes is my favorite.
